That makes the zero-standing-charge fixed tariff look even better. Why On the new EV tariff, the standing charge alone is about: 64.29p × 365 = £234.66 per year The cheaper EV charging rate saves only: 10p − 6.99p = 3.01p/kWh Across Grandma’s entire estimated EV usage: 2,286 kWh × 3.01p = about £68.81 saved per year So she would pay roughly £235 in standing charges to save only about £69 on car charging. That leaves the EV tariff about £166 behind before considering household electricity. And household electricity strongly favours the fixed tariff: EV tariff daytime rate: 30.47p Fixed tariff normal rate: 20p Fixed tariff peak 4–7pm: 30p The 30p peak period is still slightly cheaper than the EV tariff’s normal daytime rate, while electricity outside 4–7pm is more than 10p/kWh cheaper. The three-hour overnight window should ordinarily provide enough energy for her average 8,000-mile annual EV usage. Longer journeys may occasionally require charging at 20p, but that would need to happen very frequently before it outweighed the £235 annual standing-charge saving. The corrected figures turn this from a close decision into a fairly convincing win for the zero-standing-charge tariff.
