The doctor called about Anna’s results. The really good news is that the 24-hour ECG was normal and she said all of the heart investigations are very reassuring. Anna did have some periods where her heart rate went faster during the day — the fastest recorded was about 181 bpm for roughly a couple of minutes — but these were sinus tachycardia, meaning a normal speeding-up of the heart, not an abnormal rhythm. Some of these episodes happened at exactly the same times Anna recorded feeling that her heart was racing, so it does seem to explain what she has been feeling. Most importantly, the doctor was very clear that there was no SVT seen. She said the ECG would have detected SVT and there was absolutely no evidence of it during the recording. The fact that the faster-heart-rate episodes happened during the daytime and not while she was asleep was also reassuring. We also talked quite a bit about the chest pain and the swallowing/eating symptoms. I explained that Anna sometimes says food feels stuck, occasionally brings food back up after eating, and that because of my achalasia and our previous experience I know that my wife is very concerned about it. The doctor said Anna’s symptoms don’t particularly sound like childhood achalasia or oesophagitis. With achalasia in children she would more typically expect problems swallowing liquids, drooling and vomiting, and with significant oesophageal inflammation/obstruction she would expect difficulty with solids getting stuck and often drooling as well. She thinks a much more common explanation for the chest discomfort at Anna’s age is musculoskeletal/growing pain around the ribs and cartilage. I mentioned that Anna has also had quite a lot of growing pains in her legs and sometimes her wrists/elbows, which the doctor said can fit with this, particularly as she seems to have grown quite a bit recently. She also explained that children around Anna’s age start becoming much more aware of their heartbeat. When their heart naturally speeds up from running, excitement, activity etc., the unfamiliar sensation can sometimes be described as “pain” or “my heart is beating too much”. That fits quite well with things Anna has actually said herself. The doctor is going to leave Anna under a patient-initiated follow-up for the next year, so we can contact the clinic ourselves and get her seen again if the symptoms continue, worsen or we have any further concerns. She specifically said to reassure Mum, but that we can still bring Anna back whenever we feel we need to. I also asked for a copy of the 24-hour ECG report. She said she will ask her secretary whether they can email/send us a copy.
