I wouldn’t switch to bottled water because of that Instagram video. In the UK, mains tap water is generally very safe, and bottled water is not automatically “cleaner” — it can contain microplastics too, and plastic bottles can themselves be a source of them. WHO specifically notes that microplastics have been found in both tap and bottled water, and that the health significance at the levels found is still uncertain. On pharmaceuticals, the UK Drinking Water Inspectorate is quite reassuring: it says monitoring has found pharmaceutical residues at non-detectable or very low levels, and that these levels do not pose an appreciable risk to human health. Water companies are also required to assess and manage that risk. The Puure unit is more capable than a basic BRITA jug in some respects. Puure says its 3.0 system uses sediment filtration, activated carbon, KDF, dedicated PFAS media and heavy-metal/fluoride media, and claims independent ISO/IEC 17025 testing showing about 99% PFAS reduction and 100% microplastic reduction in its test conditions. Its NSF claim is narrower: the cartridge components are certified to NSF/ANSI 42 for material safety, which is not the same thing as the entire filter being NSF-certified for every contaminant claim. So at £39.90 upfront and £39.90 every four months, I think it is a reasonable purchase if you want an extra layer of filtration and peace of mind. I just wouldn’t buy it because you think your Sheffield tap water is dangerous without it. It’s more of an optional risk-reduction/taste choice than a health necessity. For your usage, the economics are actually quite favourable. At about 3 litres a day, you use roughly 1,095 litres per year. The Puure subscription shown in your screenshot is roughly £120/year after the initial purchase. That works out at around 11p per litre before accounting for the initial hardware cost. Bottled water could easily cost several times that and means buying, carrying and disposing of roughly 700–1,100 bottles a year depending on bottle size. Your existing BRITA is not useless either. A standard BRITA-type filter is mainly designed to reduce chlorine/taste, limescale and certain metals, although BRITA’s more sophisticated filters can reduce PFAS, pharmaceuticals and microplastics as well. So the exact answer depends on which BRITA cartridge you currently use. And on boiling: this is the important distinction. Boiling makes water microbiologically safer by killing bacteria, viruses and parasites. It does not reliably remove dissolved pharmaceuticals, PFAS, heavy metals or most chemical contaminants. In fact, because some water evaporates, boiling can very slightly concentrate non-volatile dissolved substances. So: * Tea/kettle: perfectly reasonable to use normal UK tap water, but boiling isn’t acting as a chemical filter. * Coffee machine: same. Tap water is normally safe; filtered water may improve taste and reduce scale. * Microplastics: boiling is not something I would rely on as a consistent removal method. Physical filtration is the more relevant technology. So, practically, my order of preference for your household would be tap water through a decent filter > ordinary tap water > bottled water as a routine solution. I wouldn’t move to bottled water for safety reasons. One thing I would do before ordering the Puure is check its actual laboratory report, particularly what particle sizes they tested for microplastics and exactly which pharmaceuticals/PFAS compounds were tested. “Reduces 200+ contaminants” is a marketing-friendly phrase and tells you much less than the underlying test conditions. If you want, I can go through Puure’s full laboratory report and compare it properly against your current BRITA cartridge, including whether the £39.90 subscription is actually good value for the amount of water the three of you drink.
