Title Edited Text

The morning was already accounted for by the time I got out of bed. Anna had a gymnastics trial at half nine, and there was an afternoon slot as well, because Jessica was coming over between one and four. I had a strange moment when I looked at the kitchen whiteboard: Jessica's visit was written on both the family calendar and Anna's little wall calendar, and no one had added any details underneath. It was as if the plan existed twice but the meaning had leaked out.

Anna was ready at the door by nine, with her gym bag slung over one shoulder. We drove. I let her give directions because I didn't really know where the trial was. She did. The building was some kind of sports hall out past the shops. She gave me a look when I made to come in with her, so I stayed outside. The trial lasted the full hour and a half. I sat in a corridor and watched people walk by, phone face-down. When she came out, her face gave nothing away. I asked her how it went, and she just sort of shrugged and said something without any real answer. Neither of us said much on the way back. The streets were quiet because it was Sunday.

In the afternoon I tidied the living room. Jessica arrived at one o'clock, took off her shoes, and the three hours filled themselves. We sat in the kitchen and talked, then moved to the sofa. We drank tea and let the conversation go where it wanted. I can't honestly say now what it was about, but that's not unusual for us. It was the kind of time together that doesn't need a specific topic. She left at four and gave me a hug at the door. The house felt quiet after she went.

Anna came down later and watched television. I noticed the calendars still open on the table, both marked with the same two things. I thought about crossing them off but didn't. It seemed enough to leave them as they were, showing a day that had been planned and then lived without requiring a trace beyond that.
