The car wouldn't start this morning. I turned the key and heard that grinding, then the flat click-click-click, then nothing. I sat there in the driver's seat watching my breath cloud up, and I knew this wasn't just a dead battery. The whole day rearranged itself in my head before I'd even opened the door. I was supposed to be at T L C by ten for a call with acu, but now I had to figure out how to get there at all.

I managed to get a lift from someone, I won't say who, and walked into the place in Attercliffe just before eleven. The call with acu was already past. I tried ringing back but it went to voicemail, so I left a message and hoped that would be enough. The morning was cold, the kind of damp cold that gets into your bones, and the office felt like it hadn't been heated all weekend. I put the kettle on and tried to settle in.

Later on I got talking to a friend about the car. That conversation is what really set the day's tone. The mechanic, he told me, had already ordered the parts and paid for them out of his own pocket. So I owed him money, and I needed to get it back to him as soon as possible. On top of that, I had to tell my clients I wouldn't be working tonight, and I had to get in touch with Jeremy Flatt. I also texted Thomas to explain I couldn't come. Every one of those things felt like a small stone in my shoe.

At half twelve I had to leave and head over to the PDSA pet hospital on the other side of town. It wasn't something I wanted to do with everything else going on, but it couldn't wait. The waiting room was busy, full of people with cats in carriers and dogs on leads, all of us pretending not to stare at each other. The visit itself was quick, a follow-up I'd been putting off. I was back in Attercliffe by twenty past two, but my head was still with the car and the money owed.

The afternoon was broken into pieces. I'd sit down to work, then remember another client I hadn't called. I'd start dialing, then get voicemail, then stare at the screen trying to remember what I was doing. I made it to T L C again around half three for a short while, but I was useless. Eventually I gave up and went home.

I wasn't home long. The school run was still on my list, and I got to Dobcroft Infant School just after half five. I was supposed to clean the office at five, but that didn't happen, and I knew it wouldn't. My youngest came out of the gates holding a painting, and we walked back together. They told me about the playground and someone's birthday, and I tried to listen, but my mind kept drifting to the mechanic's money and the messages I still had to send.

Once we were back, the evening settled. I made dinner, washed up, and finally got through to Jeremy Flatt. That was one thing crossed off. Then I went through the client list one by one, making sure everyone knew I wasn't coming tonight. The mechanic's money is still on my mind, though. I hate owing people, and I hate that he had to use his own money for something I should've been able to handle. Tomorrow I'll have to sort it out. For now, the car is still off the road, and I'm just hoping the parts come in soon.
