For plain cetirizine hydrochloride, if she's completely normal after 6-8 hours, that would be quite reassuring. I'd still observe her for about 12 hours, and if she's entirely normal at 24 hours, a clinically significant poisoning from that ingestion would be very unlikely. Cetirizine reaches peak concentrations within several hours, and veterinary toxicology guidance says overdose signs are generally expected within roughly 5 hours. The things to watch for are unusual sleepiness, agitation, vomiting, wobbliness, tremors, abnormal heart rate or breathing, or collapse. The uncertainty over how many tablets she might have eaten is the part that makes a vet/poisons consultation sensible now rather than relying solely on symptom monitoring. While cetirizine has a wide safety margin, doubling a recommended dose can still cause central nervous system signs like drowsiness, wobbliness, or hyperactivity. What the medical data actually says (from the screenshot): Now that you confirmed it is pure Cetirizine 10mg without decongestants, the immediate life-threatening danger drops significantly. One 10mg tablet is 2x the normal cat dose rather than a lethal toxicity level. What to Do Now Your cat is very unlikely to be in severe danger from plain cetirizine, but since she took roughly double a standard dose, monitor her closely for the next 5 to 8 hours. Watch for lethargy/drowsiness, unsteadiness when walking, or unusual agitation. If she remains completely normal and active, she should process it fine. If you notice severe wobbliness or repeated vomiting, contact your local vet for guidance. Gemini is AI and can make mistakes, including about people. Your privacy and Gemini + Ask Gemini

The response in that screenshot accurately cites the Merck Veterinary Manual, which lists the therapeutic dose of cetirizine for cats as 5 mg per day and notes that the exact toxic threshold for cetirizine alone is unknown because it is generally well-tolerated compared to other human medications. The difference in tone comes down to safety protocol versus clinical risk assessment: Why standard advice is cautious: 1. Combination Ingredients: Many human allergy/ cold tablets contain decongestants (like pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine) or pain relievers (like acetaminophen/paracetamol), which are lethal to cats even in tiny amounts. Until the exact ingredient (plain Cetirizine Hydrochloride) was confirmed via blister pack, treating it as an emergency was critical. 2. Overdose Margin: A full 10mg tablet is double the recommended daily feline dose. While cetirizine has a wide safety margin, doubling a recommended dose can still cause central Ask Gemini

If the tablet contains 10 mg cetirizine hydrochloride as the only active ingredient, Merck's veterinary guidance lists cetirizine at 5 mg per cat every 12-24 hours as a therapeutic dose. It also says the toxic dose in cats is unknown but that cetirizine is well tolerated. Merck Veterinary Manual +1 So one 10 mg tablet is about twice the usual therapeutic dose, rather than the sort of dose we'd ordinarily associate with a major poisoning. For a typical 4-5 kg adult cat, that's around 2-2.5 mg/kg. I'd keep an eye on the cat for the next several hours. Cetirizine overdose can potentially cause sleepiness/lethargy, stomach upset/vomiting, or sometimes unusual hyperactivity, with signs generally appearing within about 5 hours. Symptoms of an antihistamine overdose in a cat may not appear for up to 12 hours. It is much safer and more effective to treat potential poisoning early, before symptoms start. When you call, give them this information: The medication is Bell's Healthcare Allergy Relief (Cetirizine Hydrochloride), 10mg. Your cat's approximate weight.
